Discovering the Potential of Advanced
BDR

The backup and disaster recovery tools of today have come a long way from yesterday’s  solutions—but many organizations are still limited by yesterday’s tools. As their needs grow, many teams find themselves trying to protect and recover critical data with solutions that are too primitive to deliver the speed and efficiency they need.

Ahmed Niyas, a IT Manager at Freightworks spent years “getting by” with such limitations. The Freightworks Logistics, works 24×7 with Air Cargo and logistics being main business and cannot afford downtime of their IT Infrastructure as it will cost the clients heavily.”

Yet as with many organizations, Freightworks’s data needs outpaced its BDR technology.

“We have been using Quorum for last couple of years and has worked as it says commit without any issues. The hardware is stable and with Linux OS and Hyper-converged environment, it makes it more robust. We have experienced good after sales technical support assistance with people having good sound knowledge on HA and DR principles.”

Pressure and Anxiety

Location: Primary Data Center in Dubai and DR Site in Jebel Ali Free Zone.

Infrastructure: Exchange, Domain Controller, Oracle DB and other Application Servers (Total 9 Servers)

Data Size: 7 TB

Freight Works has been using Quorum for last 4 years. As a backup plan, they also had Veeam Backup solution installed.

On 23rd October Tuesday, they had an infiltration and Ransomware encrypted their Production Server and Data. Quorum came to their rescue and immediately recovered their server online within 5 minutes. They were up and working in no time and business transaction was not effected at all.

They went to their Veeam backup to restore back the server and its data, but failed. They checked their Veeam Backup, but that too failed as both the Veeam Server and the backed-up data was infected with Ransomware and it was encrypted. Which is backup by veeam was not recoverable and 22 TB data also lost.

Freight works team had to come back to Quorum appliance to do a complete BMR (Bare Metal Recovery) of their server. Quorum Appliance was running their server in Production mode and at the same time it was restoring back their Production Server.

Later Quorum did an incremental failback of the changed data in the Quorum Appliance and they had their Production servers up and running with the latest data.

Freight works rely on Quorum more over other software based solutions because Quorum is built on a Hyper Converged Infrastructure with customized based Linux based OS which protects from all malware and ransomware based threats.

Performance and Integrity

Today the onQ appliance gives the Freightworks team the peace of mind of knowing their backups are protected. The team actively backs up 10 -12 Virtual servers as well as a few physical servers. While the non-critical server jobs run once in the evening, some critical sequel servers and utility servers are backed up twice a day.

onQ’s efficiency has helped the team handle its backup needs without any impact on performance. “The process is so lightweight, I’ve never had a problem with slowness.
